2026 Bursary

About the bursary

The Bursary Scheme aims to provide suitable scholars who don’t have the means to continue flying training the opportunity to do so.

The bursary provides an ex-scholar with a limited number of flying hours, aimed at making significant progress towards obtaining a pilot’s license. In order to achieve this the applicant commits to flying their hours within 2 years. If they cannot afford accommodation there is an option to accept a reduced number of hours in lieu of the bursary paying for their accommodation and potentially food.

Eligibility

  • The scheme is open to all FSDP scholars that have completed their scholarship within the last 3 years.
  • They must either hold a current CAA medical or can confirm that they are still medically fit to hold one.

Application Window and Schedule

The application window for bursaries opens at RIAT in July and closes on 30th November each year. The selection board will meet and award bursaries in December for the following calendar year.

Selection

To be successful you should be able to show motivation towards achieving a licence. You will have made good progress during your scholarship. Your flying school will be asked for their recommendation for further training. It is important that you realise that this is not an all-expenses paid training course and you will have to demonstrate a willingness to contribute financially towards achieving a licence. Ideally you should have sought to fly further after your scholarship. You should have a plan as to how you would continue to fly after achieving your licence. There is no formal selection interview, however you may be contacted during the selection process to provide further information.

School Selection

Successful scholars select where they wish to train. However, the school must be acceptable to FSDP. If the school is not known to FSDP a suitable qualified trustee will contact the school and assess suitability. The scholar is responsible for booking their lessons.

Bursary Fund Usage

Flying costs are invoiced directly by the school to FSDP. Accommodation / food costs must be paid by the scholar then claimed back against bursary funds if desired.
