In 2001, Matt was involved in a motorcycle accident. He hit a wall and the motorcycle landed on his back. This resulted inT4 complete paraplegia. Unfortunately, in 2015 he contracted Necrotising Fasciitis – a rare flesh eating bacteria, which required extensive skin grafting to recover from the damage caused by the infection.

“I have always been interested in flight. My intention was always to join the RAF especially as I held the lofty dream of becoming a fighter pilot. The idea of achieving my ultimate ambition to fly holds real excitement for me.

It is important that my son sees me doing something really positive as the last couple of years have been very tortuous for us both. My body has let me down and caused so much negative change. It would be fitting in my view to turn all of that into a big plus”
